Try This Out
I am trying out the vegetarian thing for a week. If I last, I may continue for a bit longer. Pray for me, not so that I can last, but that my Filipino parents don't disown me.

The Sweet Spot
Since I'm on a Week 4 rest week from my P90x workout, I decided to treat myself to some Mexican food. Quality Mexican is pretty scarce up here. It's hit or miss usually but today my brother-in-law Jon and I stopped at this place called Tacos Locos #3. This place was legit for 2 reasons. #1. There restaurant was numerically named like many good taco shops in CA. And #2. They had Orange Bang. I think this is the only place in the state that has this because Jon had no idea what it was. In fact, until I came up, he has never had horchata before. This dude is crazy. Anyway, I will add Tacos Locos #3 to my list as must eats in Portland.

Brown People Like Structure
I am not referring to the noun that defines an organization of parts. I am talking about the former store found in every major American mall which is now known as Express for Men. Whenever I needed rugby shirts, lime-green polos or a tattered hat, that was my one stop shot.

A Good Show
My friend Justin got me in to Wonder Ballroom to watch one of my favorite bands, Battles, perform. They are one of many bands performing at this year's Musicfest Northwest. This was the only show I could really go to because I work the rest of the weekend. Plus, Justin got me in for free because he was taking photos for it. The show was amazing. The last time I saw Battles was a few years ago in San Diego and all but 10 people were there to see them. It must be really gratifying for a band to know that all their hard work has been paying off because the venue was packed. It was so hot and sweaty, it was like a jogger's crotch. I was in the very front and one of the members was dropping sweat-beads on my forehead. WORTH IT

America's Next Top Model
Brown People Like Squash*
I noted the asterisk because I feel like I should let everyone know that I hate squash. My old roommate, Clarke, once left a butternut squash in our pantry for God knows how long. For the longest time, we could not figure out what horrendous odor plagued our kitchen. Turns out that Clarke left the vegetable in the very back, to sit and rot behind a box of Kashi cereal and a bottle of Men's Centrum Vitamins. Since then, the site and smell of squash would give me a look of constipation.
But the squash I am talking about is the type of squash that one can only find at an asian supermarket. The squash-scented air freshener was first introduced to me in my junior year of high school. This scent elevated the status of my 87 red turbo Nissan Sentra to a whole new level. People who rode in my car thought to themselves, "Mark's car doesn't have a radio, but his car smells fantastic!" Some people love it, but some also hate it. It's a hot discussion, it's kind of like the abortion issue. But for me, I love the sweet smell of that vegetable aroma. If only squash really smelled like that.

The 90 Day Challenge
I am officially fat. I have always been able to get away with "husky" for most of my life. But after a summer of just eating and doing nothing active, and to top it all off with a week-long eating binge in Mexico, I have officially tipped the scales over. Looking in the mirror, I can't help but laugh at how I let myself go. Sept. 1st marked the day of my 90 day fitness challenge. I have decided to get into the best shape of my life. Many of my friends whom I've told, have scoffed at my goals. So to all the haters...we shall see. Hopefully I can put as much effort into post pic as I did to my pre pic. I will be sure to keep you all updated.

Getting My Rocks Off
The gang I and travelled over to Dougan Falls over in Washington today. They had a pretty cool river with a bunch of waterfalls. There was one waterfall in particular where people jump from about 10ft. high into a bottomless water pit. I did that a couple of times. I wasn't feeling too risky because my insurance hasn't kicked in yet. There were parts where you could jump from a higher ledge and even higher on top of a tree. Crazy white boys jumping from 50-60ft high. Stuff White People Like: Doing Dumb Dangerous Shit.

Beating the Heat
It was 106 degrees today. So we decided to put on our hiking shoes and get wet at Oneonta Gorge. It's a small hike upstream that leads to a waterfall where you can swim around. I felt like I was in Last of the Mohicans.
George mentally preparing for the hike
About halfway to the falls, this is where the water gets about waist high.
I just imagine Indians slaughtering the white man from the gorge above.

In Honor of the Olympics
Found a dim-sum place in town. I knew this place was legit the second we drove into the strip mall. Next door was an asian video store and a fur coat place. And I also asked a couple Chinese people at the asian market where the best dim-sum place was. The place is called Wong's King. Huge dining area with servers in lavender-colored suits pushing carts of different dim-sum around. Food was amazing, even my friend George liked it, and he's from the Bay Area. I am not too sure if this place had MSG because the minute we got into the car, we all passed out. Next time you guys come up to visit, we are going to Wong's King for sure.

First Restaurant Review
Last week, a few of us went out for some Mexican food. Living in San Diego, I think I have the right to be a little elitist when it comes to food from down south. We went to this place called Esparza's. The place isn't that bad, but I would think of it more Tex-Mex. It's hard for me to take a place seriously when none of the servers are Mexican. Our server looked like Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption. And I was a little disappointed in my tamales. They were a bit too dry and not enough flavor. However, the salsa was tasty and the margaritas were pretty good as well. I also liked the paintings of cowboys and dead turtles hung up on the ceilings. I am trying to get in good with the Mexican custodians at my work so they could chime me in to better Mexican food like I am used to. So if you are reading this, California Burrito, I miss you dearly.

Get Some
So the ping-pong craze has swept our house. We have been playing tournament style non-stop since we got it. And with this new obsession, we have all given each other new nicknames:
Mark a.k.a MADONNA (for my diva-ish behavior on the court and my demand for a one word name)
George a.k.a ENGINEER (for his schematic ball placement, and also he was supposed to become a real engineer)
Matt C. a.k.a. LeFROG (for his hopping tendencies during
match play, and also for his arrogant, French-like, attitude)
Brynne a.k.a CHICKENHEAD (for her sporadic head shaking after an unforced error)
Kari a.k.a. SKID-MARKS (for her skittish match play and because she hates the nickname)

Brain Dead
I think I peed my pants, crapped myself and had a full blown seizure watching the Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony. It was the craziest thing I have ever seen. My eyes were seriously hurting from all of the crazy things I was seeing. I want that 500 ft. LED screen in my living room. It totally sucks to be London's Olympic committee because they have to follow that. They have 4 years to start scheming.
We Up In This
A week inPortland is in the books. So far, we are having a great time, getting to know the
neighborhoods, meeting some of the locals. Our house is pretty much unpacked, finally finishing it up today with internet connection and most importantly, a ping-pong table.
The things I have noticed most about this place is that this place is full of great eats, great parks, and great butchy lesbians with bad tattoos. It has been a pretty hectic week so I hope to post more up once I get more settled.
